Dun Deal For Stockport County As Tayo Edun Checks In From Peterborough

Stockport County is pleased to announce that it has agreed terms for the signing of left-back Tayo Edun on a free transfer, following the expiration of his contract at Peterborough United.

The versatile 27-year-old will join the Club on a two-year deal with the option of an additional year, having enjoyed a strong second half of the season with the Posh after signing from Charlton Athletic in January. He made 17 appearances for Darren Ferguson’s side in League One, contributing with two goals and two assists, and turned down a new deal there in order to move to Edgeley Park.

Capable of playing in a variety of positions but most comfortable at left-back, Tayo began his career at Fulham. He made his professional debut for the Cottagers at the age of 18, starting a Carabao Cup tie against Leyton Orient.

Tayo made seven appearances during his time at Craven Cottage before enjoying a loan spell at Championship side, Ipswich Town – scoring on his debut for the Tractor Boys in a 2-2 draw with his future side, Blackburn Rovers.

Upon leaving Fulham in 2020, Tayo made the move to Lincoln City – becoming a key figure in defence for Michael Appleton’s promotion-chasing side. He appeared in 42 of Lincoln’s 46 league games during the 2020/21 season as the Imps finished 5th, before losing the League One Play-Off Final to Blackpool at Wembley.

His impressive form at Sincil Bank saw him draw interest from Championship clubs the following season, eventually joining Blackburn Rovers on deadline day for an undisclosed fee.

The former England youth international made 28 appearances in the Championship during his two seasons at Ewood Park, before moving on to Charlton and then Peterborough.

Tayo impressed during his time with the Posh, gaining regular minutes in League One and showcasing his ability to play both in defence and further forward for Ferguson’s men. His ability from set-pieces also caught the eye, finding the net directly from a corner against Shrewsbury Town and scoring a sensational free-kick in a win against Cambridge United.

Director of Football, Simon Wilson said:

“We are really pleased to secure Tayo’s services for the next couple of years. He joins us at a great age, with experience of League One and Championship football, and was really motivated to join what we are doing here.

“He finished strongly at Peterborough last season and was in demand this summer so as a free agent this is good business for the club. I’m sure fans staff and teammates will make him feel very welcome as he settles in over the coming weeks.”

First-Team Manager Dave Challinor said:

“Getting Tayo to the Club is a big coup for us. He comes at a great age, with brilliant experience, and is someone we feel can have a big impact on our team.

“He’s another player that has real adaptability in the positions that he plays, anywhere down the left-hand side, and he will add real quality to our group over the coming seasons. We all wish him well as he starts what is hopefully a long, exciting and successful spell with us, and we are all really looking forward to working with him.”
